ABOUT VILNIUS
Welcome to VILNIUS, the capital of the Republic of Lithuania!!! Officially the city between the rivers Neris and Vilnele was granted this status in 1323, when Gediminas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania invited merchants and craftsmen from Western Europe to settle "in to the capital Vilnius".
Vilnius is also a historical centre, its old city is one of the biggest in Eastern Europe (360 hectare). The most precious historical and cultural heritage is concentrated in the capital. The buildings of the old town are around 1500 - are from different ages and all European styles of architecture. Though Vilnius is referred to as a baroque city, here you can also find gothic, renaissance, classicism and jugendstyle period constructions. The main accents symbolizing the capital are Gediminas tower and Cathedral square. These are like gates to historical center of the capital. In 1994 the old city of Vilnius was included into the list of the UNESCO World cultural heritage.
